After writing “15 uplifting bible verses about Joy.” I decided, based on the number of positive responses I received to write this article “29 Great Bible Verses About Joy.”
Joy is God’s gift, and it’s powerful in its ability to neutralize the stings of hard times. However, not all of us understand the importance of having joy, and the role joy plays in the believer’s life.
And as a result, the devil has been successful in thwarting the believer’s quest for joy and happiness. But God is good, and his love and mercy are boundless, and as such extended grace to his people. With the intention that we might come to know the power of joy.
But sadly, we haven’t quite reached that place of understanding yet. And for this purpose, I have written this article. To share with God’s people the power and importance of Joy.
The Lord has promised us joy, but for whatever reasons, the enemy has gone on an all-out attack to keep us in defeat, sorrows, and pain. However, God is true to his words, and he cannot lie. So, if according to the Bible, God has blessed us with peace and joy; then we can live in peace and joy. And without further ado, here are 29 great bible verses about joy and its power.
“Thou wilt show me the path of life: in thy presence is fullness of joy; at thy right hand, there are pleasures forevermore.”
Bible verses about joy: God’s gift
There is no shortish of joy where God is concerned. And the fact that God is generous, and have great delight when his children live in peace; is a great incentive to make use of God’s gift.
And it is my belief that the child of God cannot live a victorious life without first experiencing joy. And Psalm 16:12 agrees. In it, we can see the psalmist associating life with knowing joy, “lead me in the path of life; in your presence, there is the fullness of joy.”
Therefore, for this reason, we ought to gladly accept God’s gift of joy. And in hard times, we should remind ourselves who we are, and what God thinks and says about us. The devil has no right to steal your joy. Situations and circumstances have no right to rob you of what God has given to you. Today is your day of transformation, of victory, and to begin to experience joy.
“Make me hear joy and gladness; that the bones which thou hast broken may rejoice.”
Bible verses about joy: inspires hope
Here in Psalms 51:8, the psalmist is broken, he is grieving, and the Lord seems far away from him. And from all indications, it looks as though David was struggling to keep himself together. It appears that he was in a dark and hopeless place.
But the one thing I admire most about David; is his confidence in God in the face of adversities and pain. In this verse, he asks God for joy and gladness. Because he knew how having joy felt. And as such, David longed to experience joy again. He was seeking restoration and he hoped with all his heart to get it. But he was also fully aware that restoration hinged on him first finding joy.
Using Psalm 51:8 as our example, we see joy acting as an of agent inspiration.
Therefore, it’s highly recommended that we all as children of God understand the working of joy, and it’s benefits. Otherwise, we will struggle to hold on to hope in this world.
“Now may the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you believe so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.”
Bible verses about joy: overflow with hope
Psalms 51:8 talks about the power of joy. And its ability to cause one to wait and hope. Similarly, Romans 15:13, says the same thing, but in a different light.
In Psalm 51:8, joy inspires hope, but in Romans 15:13, joy cause the believer to overflow with hope. In other words, when God’s children live joyfully; the only thing they know is God’s promises; and what he says about them and himself. And that is what we call boundless hope.
We are living in a world where people are fearful of what might happen next. They are uncertain about their future, and as a result; they are anxious and unhealthy. But there is hope, abundant hope, and all that is needed is for you to say yes to God. The moment you surrender to God is the moment you will experience God’s peace. And hope will overflow in your life like the river of Jordan in the days of Joshua.
“When anxiety was great within me, your consolation brought joy to my soul.”
Bible verses about joy: erases anxiety
In hard times, anxiety, sorrow, and depression will take the place of joy. And as such, the child of God will never see God’s plan and purpose for their lives. Therefore, for the overall wellbeing of the child of God; having joy is crucial. However, the enemy will fight tooth and nails to stop us. But being children of the Almighty God, we have the power to resist the devil using the word of God.
And considering that God has given to us his word of knowledge and understanding; we have no excuse than to overcome the devil. And this we can do when we read, study, and meditate on God’s word. But the devil will rather you turn a blind eye on God’s word -to our peril.
Nevertheless, I want to encourage you, especially those of you who are having a rough time. The key to overcome anxieties is to read God’s word.
Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith; who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God.
Bible verses about joy: creates endurance
The message of Hebrews 11:2 is two-fold. The first thing it does is to encourage us to look at Jesus; who is the author and finisher of our faith. That is to say, Jesus is the ultimate fulfiller of God’s righteous laws, and he is the absolute perfection of faith. And with that, the believer can have confidence in the fact that what Christ has started in them, he will also complete.
And secondly, Hebrews 12:2 is saying to us that the life of the child of God is not without hard times. However, the believer can endure hard times if joy is present. And as such, the onus is on the child of God to live joyfully.
But rejoicing in God, especially in hard and suffering times isn’t easy. But the reality of the matter is; the only way we are going to endure sufferings is by holding on to joy.
“Then he said unto them, Go your way, eat the fat, and drink the sweet, and send portions unto them for whom nothing is prepared: for this day is holy unto our Lord: neither be ye sorry; for the joy of the LORD is your strength.”
Bible verses about joy: inspires strength
In Nehemiah 8:10, God’s people were experiencing sorrow. And which for the most part; worn them out to the point of weakness. But then joy, the Lord’s joy; strengthen them, and they were able to rejoice amid adversities.
So with that being the case, we can conclude that joy produces strength in the lives of God’s people. Similarly to the believers in Nehemiah. Having joy will strengthen every child of God.
“You give him blessings forever; You cheer him with joy in your presence.”
Bible verse about joy: makes us cheerful
We are cheerful when joy has its rightful place in our lives. However, the enemy has robbed many a saint from God’s best. And being cheerful is one of God’s best. There isn’t any greater pleasure to God than seeing his children living cheerfully in his presence.
So I urge you to meditate on this verse about joy until it has sunk deep in your spirit.
“Those who look to him are radiant with joy; their faces will never be ashamed.”
Bible verses about joy: give us the victory.
Having joy and giving God praise will guarantee us victory over our enemies. And we see this happening in 2 Chronicles the twentieth chapter. Israel at the time was fearful of incoming danger, and the at the time, King Josasoptath, cried out to God with his people, and God answered. And God responded to his people by telling them to go into the battle.
However, as the people marched into battle, the King instructed the singers to go ahead before the army, and begin to praise God. So as the singers praised God along with the entire congregation of Israel; God stepped in and decimated Israel’s enemies.
And likewise, when we look to God, he will cause his joy to saturate our lives. And when this happens, the child of God can praise God; and praise is our victory.
Definition of Joy in the Bible
Joy is the unexplained assurance that flows from the Holy Spirit into our spirits; letting us know that God is ultimately in control of everything in our lives.
According to Strong’s Exhaustive Concordance; the Greek meaning of Joy is “chario, and it means gladness, cheerfulness, or a clam delight.
Therefore, Joy is to our life what water is to a thirsty animal in a heated desert. And it is for this purpose that God has given his children the fruit of Joy. Because life will get rough, and our aptitude to praise God will diminish. And it is then we need to remember that God has given to us this fruit of Joy that we can use to ward off our fears and anxieties.
Moreover, we don’t need to go looking for Joy; once you are sealed by the Holy Spirit, you are a child of God and you already have Joy. But it’s a case of realizing it, and then using it to live a joyful and victorious life. Because, after all, the Joy of the Lord is our strength.
Bible Verses About Joy and Suffering
As is seen throughout scriptures that sorrow and suffering precede Joy and that Joy comes as a result of being hopeful in trials. So then, it leaves us to believe that we cannot experience joy in this world without first having to go through suffering. And based on Hebrews 12:2 “Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith; who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God;” I have to agree.
So, with that being the case, as a child of God, we must be prepared to suffer and go through many afflictions. But through it all, if we remain hopeful. We will understand that many are the afflictions of the righteous, but God will deliver them out of them all.
Therefore, it is for this purpose I have compiled this collection of short bible verses about Joy and suffering; I hope they minister to you.

In the bible, for the child of God; freedom is the state of being able to do whatever our hearts desire according to the will of God. Living in freedom doesn’t mean we wouldn’t be opposed.
But living in freedom means that we can freely express ourselves in whatever situation and circumstance as a result of the innate Joy. In essence, Joy strips us from our inhibitions and limitations, whether self exposed or of others. And when this happens, invariably, we are free to express ourselves the way God expects.
