bible verses about obedienceThese bible verses on obedience will help to strengthen your relationship with God. And point you in the right direction to receive every blessing that God has in store for you.

Often overlook, obedience is the common denominator of blessings and rewards. And in many ways, humanity cannot exist together without complying to law and order. And where the Christian is concerned; submitting to authority is a matter of life and death, blessings and curses.

What is Obedience to God?

Obedience is living in compliance with God’s law and order and submitting to his authority. And in many scriptures throughout the bible. God has placed the onus on his children to understand the importance of obedience to him. And similarly in Ephesians 6:1; God expects his children to follow his commands.

1 samuel 15:22-24
“And Samuel said, Hath the Lord as great delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices, as in obeying the voice of the Lord? Behold, to obey is better than sacrifice, and to hearken than the fat of rams” 1 Samuel 15:22-24.

Bible Verses About Obedience

Disobedience has deadly consequences. Did you know that between two to three million Israelites died in the wilderness? Yes, they died because of their disobedience toward God.

Upon leaving Egypt, God promised to give the Israelites a land flowing with milk and honey. But they all died without seeing the promised land. Joshua and Caleb were the two exceptions

“The Lord said to Moses and Aaron: “How long will this wicked community grumble against me? I have heard the complaints of these grumbling Israelites.

So tell them, ‘As surely as I live, declares the Lord, I will do to you the very thing I heard you say: In this wilderness, your bodies will fall—every one of you twenty years old or more who was counted in the census and who has grumbled against me.

Not one of you will enter the land I swore with uplifted hand to make your home, except Caleb son of Jephunneh and Joshua son of Nun” Numbers 14:26-30.

Again, in Joshua chapter seven. We see disobedience resulting in the stoning to death of Achan and his entire household. They received the death penalty by stoning because of Achan’s refusal to obey God.

Before invading Jericho, God told his people not to take anything from Jericho. But Achan had other ideas, he disobeyed God, and he took the silver, the robe, and the gold bar. So God instructed Joshua and the people to stone him and his entire household.

“Then Joshua, together with all Israel, took Achan son of Zerah, the silver, the robe, the gold bar, his sons and daughters, his cattle, donkeys and sheep, his tent and all that he had, to the Valley of Achor.

Joshua said, “Why have you brought this trouble on us? The Lord will bring trouble on you today.” Then all Israel stoned him, and after they had stoned the rest, they burned them”Joshua 7:24-25.

Whether you read from genesis to revelation, you will see that it pays to obey God; and at all cost. Your obedience is a matter of life and death.

So, with that in mind, here are a collection of bible verses about obedience. These verses have helped in my Christian journey, and I encourage you to read, meditate, and walk-in compliance with them.

Acts 5:29 “Then Peter and the other apostles answered and said, We ought to obey God rather than men” (King James Version).

Bible verses about obedience: obey at all costsLife is not without its fair share of troubles, especially for those who have committed to obeying God. In the book of Acts, and the gospels we read that Christ commissioned the apostles to preach the gospel. And in the fifth chapter of the book of Acts, we read that those apostles preached to the point of relentless persecution.

In the days of the apostles, the elders warned them not to preach Christ in Jerusalem. But Peter, understanding the importance of obeying God, asked which is better, “to obey men or to obey God?”

I can tell you that in your life you will face people and situations that will fight you tooth and nail to disobey God. Yes, you will have to decide whether to obey God or man.

Here is your dilemma, “obey men and enjoy the easy life. Or, obey God and suffer the consequences of disobeying men.”

The apostles chose the latter. They disobeyed men but obeyed God, and God used them to bring deliverance to millions.

I pray that people, situations, and even your very own emotions will not succeed in getting you to disobey God.

Romans 5:19 “For as by one man’s disobedience many were made sinners, so by the obedience of one shall many be made righteous”(King James Version).

Bible verses about obedience: blesses Others. This verse is a clear indication of how one’s actions affect others. The text speaks of Adam, and how his refusal to obey God plunged mankind into ruin. And I am sure that Adam did not stop and think about the possible consequences his actions may attract. But he knowingly went ahead and sin against God by disobeying. And now, as a result of Adam error, we are born sinners into this world.

So as you can see, when we refuse to obey God, we are not only making life difficult for ourselves but those around us also.

And I know that everyone will surely pay for their sins, but it’s also true that one’s sin can have a damaging effect on others. And this verse is a perfect example of that.

But thankfully, just as how one’s disobedience can affect others by transferring curses. The same way, and even more, one’s obedience can bring blessings to others. And that’s what Christ Jesus did when he chose to obey God, he transferred blessings to us.

I pray as you this text that you realize how important it is for you and those around you that you obey God.

Deuteronomy 13:4 “Ye shall walk after the LORD your God, and fear him, and keep his commandments, and obey his voice, and ye shall serve him, and cleave unto him”(King James Version).

Bible verses about obedience: call to obey. Here we see the scripture admonishing us to obey God. But why is this text urging us to obey God? Well, simple, obedience is the only way to unlock all that God has in store for us. Without obedience, we will miss God and all His promises.

Our call to obedience is not for God but us, we need to obey God. And if we desire success; there is no way around this.

Deuteronomy 30:20 “That thou mayest love the LORD thy God, and that thou mayest obey his voice, and that thou mayest cleave unto him: for he is thy life and the length of thy days: that thou mayest dwell in the land which the LORD sware unto thy fathers, to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob, to give them”(King James Version).

Bible verses about obedience: why? In Deuteronomy 13:14, Moses urged the people to obey God without giving them any explanation to why. They were told to obey, but why? Deuteronomy 30:20 gives us an explanation of why.

The Israelites were asked to obey God, but why? Because obeying God was their only chance of survival in the wilderness. Their lives hinge on their obedience to God.

In this text, Moses alluded to the people that God is their life, length of days, and security. Their best chance of surviving pending danger rested on their obedience toward God. But they disobeyed, and except for Joshua and Caleb, they all died in the wilderness.

What is Deuteronomy 30:20 saying to us? This text serves as a good reminder of why we should obey God. We may not know what the future holds. But if we obey the Almighty God who holds the future. Then we have the God of yesterday, today and forever, guiding us every step of our lives.

When we are weak and sick in our bodies, he is our health. When we are fearful, he is our defense, when we are sad, he is our joy, but theses blessings come through obedience.

2 Corinthians 10:5 “Casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ.”

Bible verses about obedience: obey with your mind. According to 2 Corinthians 10:5, there is a spiritual duel in our minds with opposing forces trying to gain control of our thought life. And these two powers at war are God’s word and man’s reasoning. God’s word is inspired knowledge to help us to live better lives. And man’s ideologies are generally against God’s laws.

So, what do we do as Christians? Because after all, we live in this word among men.

2 Corinthians 10:5 says to submit to God and repudiate any of man’s reasoning that’s against God’s laws. And we must never give ourselves over to worldly reasonings.

So from here onward, I encourage you to commit yourself to think the way God instructed. “Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things” Philippians 4:8.

Ephesians 6:1 “Children, obey your parents in the Lord: for this is right.”

Bible verses about obedience: for everyone. Whether you are a child, teenager, or adult obedience is for you. There is no exception, at every stage of life we are expected to obey God.

The wisdom of Ephesians 6:1 is this, “if we can obey our parents here on earth. Then cultivating a heart of obedience towards God will flow naturally.”

Jeremiah 42:6 “Whether it be good, or whether it be evil, we will obey the voice of the Lord our God, to whom we send thee; that it may be well with us when we obey the voice of the Lord our God.”

Bible verses about obedience: under old Covenant. Obeying God isn’t a new phenomenon. Men and women in the Old Testament, under the old covenant, obeyed God under severe oppositions. They had to decide whether to obey God or men, but they obeyed God.

In the New Testament, under the new covenant, the apostles faced the same dilemma, and they too obeyed God.

I hope you see that every man and woman that God used mightily made a conscious decision to obey God. And I hope you will too.

1 Peter 1:2 “Elect according to the foreknowledge of God the Father, through sanctification of the Spirit, unto obedience and the sprinkling of the blood of Jesus Christ: Grace unto you, and peace be multiplied.”

Bible verses about obedience: under the new covenant. God expects nothing less than our obedience to him. And in the Old Testament, we see that God’s servants obeyed him. But now we are under the new covenant. And the question is; does God still requires obedience? Yes, He does, and here in 1 Peter, we see a call for obedience toward God.

So, considering the grace that God has extended to us, there is no excuse why we should disobey him. And whether we read the Old or New Testament, the message remains the same; God has called us to obey him.

Isaiah 1:19-20 “If ye be willing and obedient, ye shall eat the good of the land: But if ye refuse and rebel, ye shall be devoured with the sword: for the mouth of the Lord hath spoken it” (Isaiah 1:19-20 King James Version).

Bible verses about obedience: abound with good things. Your obedience to God is the key to receive any from God. God rewards obedience, and nothing is off-limits to those who obey him.

But unlike obedience, disobedience is the source of most hardships, troubles, and disappointments.

I pray that as you read this text of obedience toward God; love and appreciation to obey God will grow in your heart. And then you will become a partaker of everything good that God has offered.

Romans 6:16 “Know ye not, that to whom ye yield yourselves, servants, to obey, his servants ye are to whom ye obey; whether of sin unto death or obedience unto righteousness?”

Bible verses about obedience: you are who you obey. Romans 6:16 clarifies that we are whoever we obey. For example, the child of God will seek to honor God. Because the is one with God. But an unbeliever will turn a blind eye at God’s word. And there isn’t any middle ground; it’s either one or the other.

“No man can serve two masters: for either he. will hate the one, and love the other; or else. he will hold to the one, and despise the other, Ye cannot serve God and mammon” Matthew 6:24.

the law is for everyone
No One is above the law, we must all obey.

Submitting to human authority has always been a heated topic of discussion. But what does God says about it? God’s verdict on obeying human authority is revealed in these bible verses on obedience to authority.

Genesis 16:9 The angel of the Lord said to her, “Go back to your mistress and submit to her authority.

Romans 13:1 Let everyone submit to the governing authorities, since there is no authority except from God, and the authorities that exist are instituted by God.

Romans 13:3 For rulers are not a terror to good conduct, but bad. Do you want to be unafraid of the authority? Do what is good, and you will have its approval.
